You've Gotta Have Heart – Area V Young Riders at NAJYRC
9/28/11Put eight terrific horses, eight great riders, eight incredible grooms including an awesome head groom, one amazing barn manager, one young rider coordinator, one fantastic coach, eight fabulous families and one magical veterinarian together and you have all the ingredients you need for success at the 2011 North American Junior and Young Rider Championships held in July at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. Area V showed the rest of the nation and Canada that it truly was "Our Time" to shine.
Most of the riders and horses attended the training camp the week before the competition at Coach Mike Huber's Gold Chip Stables, where they refined their skills and enjoyed each other's company. The entire team is grateful to Mike and Cherye Huber, the Piepgras family and the Pevahouse family, Lynne and Andy Partridge and Heather Morris and Jake Barton for their wonderful hospitality during this week. Riders and grooms spent the week getting ready for the competition and bonding as a team. The grooms, under the demanding but benevolent eye of Head Groom Elizabeth Crowder got all the equipment cleaned and loaded.
It would be hard to imagine traveling in anything smaller than Mike's big rig as it takes at least 1/2 of the rig to haul the team's equipment and the infamous Boomer Sooner golf cart. Because of the heat, the "team bus" left Gold Chip on the evening of Sunday, July 24th, with our Coach, "Iron Mike" Huber at the wheel, Young Rider Coordinator, Diane Pitts riding shotgun (and dog holder), 10 riders/grooms, horses, equipment, golf cart and 3 dogs. A merry band we were as we left for our 15–hour haul to the Kentucky Horse Park.
Kentucky was hot and humid. Not that we weren't used to the heat, but the overwhelming humidity was something new to deal with. Luckily, our team vet, Dr. Chris Newton of Rood and Riddle in Lexington, knew what needed to be done to deal with the heat. The horses really suffer in the heat, so we were vigilant about giving them fluids and keeping them cool. The Area V Team "Spa" included a water–cooled fan courtesy of the Phillips family that was truly a life saver. Each horse enjoyed its personal time at the Spa Cooler! Mike was careful to keep the training sessions focused and short so the horses would remain as fresh as possible.
The first jogs were Wednesday afternoon, July 27th and thanks to the wonderful fashion sense of Julie Phillips and Stacy Ehlers, Area V Riders once again turned heads with their jog outfits, Taylor Wood even being featured on the USEA web site! All horses passed the jogs so we were ready for the competition to begin.
Official Opening Ceremonies for the competition followed on Wednesday evening with riders from each of the competing disciplines, dressage, show jumping, eventing, reining, and endurance parading into the Rolex stadium behind their team banners. Riders came from each of the different areas of the United States plus Canada and Mexico.
The three Two Star Riders, Emma Kate Fisher, Jacob Fletcher and Rowdie Adams were combined with a rider from Area IX, Kendyl Tracy, to make a full Two Star team. The Two Star dressage was first on Thursday morning, July 28th and once again it was Jacob Fletcher and Falcon Splash leading off the competition. All of us were amazed as Jacob and Falcon set the bar very high with a beautiful and precise dressage test. Emma Kate and Carlingford's Forever (Galway) followed closely with a quality test that we have learned to expect and Rowdie and No Money Down (Boxer), moving gracefully and beautifully, ended up near the top after dressage.
On Friday, it was the One Star team of Alyssa Phillips, Alexa Ehlers, Tori New and Avery Klunick and individual rider Taylor Wood who performed amazing dressage tests, with Alyssa and the always wonderful Sundance Bay sitting in second place after an accurate and flowing dressage test. All the Area V One Star riders were near the top of the competition after Day 1.
Saturday morning dawned a little cooler than the previous few days and slightly overcast, which was perfect for cross country. Karen Shull, our barn manager, had the vet box organized and working like a well-oiled machine. Falcon Splash was the first horse on course and he showed everyone what a truly amazing horse he is. There is no doubt that the most recognizable horse in the competition (the only paint) has a big heart as he put in a double clear cross country round.
All four of the horses on the Two Star team had clear cross country runs, adding NO POINTS to their team score after cross country, and putting the team in first place by 6/10 of a point. The One Star team followed shortly after and the Area V team was brilliant. All four team horses went clear cross country and the team was in first place by a considerable margin at day's end and Alyssa Phillips and Dancer remained in second place individually, less than a rail out of first place and Tori in a Taylor Wood and On Eagle's Wings also made Area V proud. determined round on cross country, avoiding the mishaps of so many other riders.
Once again the horses were given fluids to keep up their strength after the humid cross country day. The rain came just as the competition was ending but instead of cooling things down, it made them steamier. Dr. Chris and Mike jogged the horses on Saturday evening to make sure they were all still sound. Sunday morning dawned with the second jogs and once again all of Area V, looking stylish, passed the jogs. On to stadium…leading by over 20 points in the One Star and by less than a point in the Two Star. This time it was the One Star riders' turn to go first and Area V once again looked brilliant. Taylor Wood paved the way, followed by Alexa, Avery, Tori and Alyssa. All of the "fans" held their breath as Alyssa, the youngest rider on the team (14) and Dancer,
the oldest horse on the team (19) trotted into the Rolex Stadium, the next to last to go in the competition. Regardless of the outcome, this was to be Dancer's last competition. Tears flowed like water in the stands as the two put in one of the most beautiful rides of the day, capturing the gold medal with a double clear round. It was a perfect ending to Dancer's
brilliant career and a perfect beginning to Alyssa's. Team Area V captured the team gold medal by a large margin and beamed on the podium as the tune "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" fittingly reflected the team motto – It's Our Time! At the press conference following the One Star competition, tears again flowed as Alyssa thanked her wonderful, wonderful horse, Dancer, who proved that heart matters. She also thanked her wonderful family and her mentor and coach Angela Gryzwinski who was on hand to help out and share in this special victory.
Although the One Star team was a tough act to follow, the Two Star team was ready to go. Riders once again competed from the lowest place to the highest. For Team Area V, Emma Kate was the first to go and she and Galway showed the team how it should be done, putting in one of the most effortless and beautifully ridden double clear show jumping rounds of the competition. Jacob and Falcon were in 7th place entering the stadium and everyone's favorite spotted pony showed once again what a big heart he has. Like Dancer, this was to be Falcon's last NAJYRC (his third).
He and Jacob clocked around the course brilliantly and then watched as those coming after them kept knocking down rails. Rowdie and Boxer and Kendyl Tracy and Ever So Lucky each had great rounds as well, but Area III had 3 double clear rounds and snatched the gold medal. Team Area V and IX captured the silver medal with all four riders finishing in the top ten. Emma Kate and Galway were 9th individually, Kendyl and Ever So Lucky were 8th, Rowdie and Boxer were 4th and Falcon and Jacob won the silver individual medal in a heart–warming finale NAJYRC for this amazing horse. Always entertaining, Jacob also charmed everyone with his unique hair style at the awards ceremony and all the reporters at the press conference

It would be hard to imagine a better group of people than those who were part of Team Area V at the NAJYRC. Everyone made it home safely and exhausted. It was a storybook ending to a beautiful week and we look forward to bringing home 2 gold team medals in 2012!
